New Preprint! Kelsey Huus led the µHEAT (Microbial-Human Ecology And Temperature) study aimed at understanding how the microbiome affects response to vaccine. She assessed 171 healthy people receiving their SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Roughly half had elevated temperature right after the vaccine. The microbiome did not respond to the change in body temperature. However, the overall motility had a marked association with a higher temperature response, and this was seen mostly in the people who eat meat. It turns out they probably eat more processed foods also, which drives flagellin production by certain microbiome members. We were able to reproduce the findings in mice (who get cold instead of hot). Lots of great stuff in this paper. Thanks to all the collaborators!
