In February Victor Schmidt and Liam Fitzstevens completed a field sampling expedition with the Centre de Recherches Médicales (CERMEL), in Lambaréné, Gabon. They returned to Tübingen after recruiting more than 400 Gabonese adults and infants for Victor’s ongoing postdoctoral project. Part of the sampling involved traditional forest communities with no access to modern medicine, which will be combined with samples from Vietnam and Germany to study the evolutionary history of Bifidobacterium across geographies and ethnicities. Next stop, Hanoi!
